Drying mind-bones

Zwaantje Kurpershoek

1 June 2023 - 25 June 2023

Zwaantje Kurpershoek (1998, NL) is a visual artist who primarily makes objects and sculptures that derive from a combination of fiction, imagination and (personal) history. There is always an interplay between the pieces of fictional story and the physical appearance of her work: both influence
each other in turns during the making process. This way a number of characters have arisen in Kurpershoeks work whom she calls “players”, a term that emphasises they have their own agency. The player’s properties influence the different ways in which they may occur in our physical world. Typical to kurpershoek’s practice is the combination of very unlikely and specific sources such as vermin, borders, traditional Dutch headwear, governing movement in board games, anime characters and counting. By connecting these seemingly unrelated sources she is exploring the boundaries between things and their relations.

“Drying mind bones” shows bone-like structures of unbaked clay.
Areas with mind bones are being managed by Kardoes, a curly hellhound that has “bullets but seeds” for teeth. Kardoes provides the mind bones with dry breath so they may detach from themselves and all other things.
