De Servieskast

Maribel Beekman Hetharia

3 November 2022 - 27 November 2022

In Maribels final artwork she deprives objects (partly) their function and give them a new life as art object in return. What happens when you deprive a function from an object? Will only the beauty remain? These issues served as a guideline for her final work. Looking for the dividing line between art and product design. “De Servieskast is a project with which I want to trigger the mindset of people. I do this by alienating the everyday, in this case, the tableware. Each piece of tableware is unique and tells its own story. You can’t eat from the plate anymore, the mug can no longer be put upright and the bowl falters from side to side. Through this alienation I try to expose the core of their beauty. They have become works of art where you can sometimes drink from or eat from.”

Artist Statement:
“As a designer I am looking for the dividing line between art and product design. In this way I present myself as an artist. With my work I like to touch 3 subjects; the philosophy, functionality and sustainability of the work. How do they relate to each other. My love for ceramics and metal arose during my studies. I noticed while experimenting that I found the opposite characteristics of the material very interesting. These contrasts created a common thread in my work. Always looking for a way to visualize my issues without judging other people. I only try to encourage my audience to look differently at products/artwork, in order to see an object more as a whole.”
