Exhibition Navigation
In his artistic practice, Casper de Jong explores the physical and emotional properties of machines. Casper sees a trait of frustration within machines, an almost child-like behaviour of trying to discover one’s own capabilities by trial and error. Within robotic/machinic design, this trait -which consists of imperfections, emotions and frustration- is often hidden under sleek design and optimisation. By highlighting machinic properties, Casper puts an emphasis on this hidden frustration. In doing so he works primarily with concepts of repetition and failure, seeking to answer questions like:
What does a robot ‘feel’ when its sole task can never be accomplished?
How does a machine ‘experience’ continuously repeating the same action?
During BZZ, TSCHK, HNG V 1.2. (2022), Casper, in multiple art installations, gives machines the opportunity to experience what it is like to fail instead of having to continuously succeed. At the same time, he also makes the visitor reflect on their own behaviour. Because, how can we sympathize with a machine and how do we as humans deal with failure?
Casper de Jong (NL) Explores what connects and moves us as humans through his playful
interactive work. Combining theatre, ethics and complex human emotions, Casper’s artistic
practice offers a light-hearted approach to the conversation around the integration of
technology into our lives, minds and enviroment. In doing so, he provokes people to reflect
on the good and the dangerous sides of technology.
