In her practice, Misha Stevenson focuses on repetition, material, and emotion. She gets inspired by contrasting feelings that she can’t place. “I think a lot of emotions don’t show up individually; they come up together intertwined”. She wants to explore these emotions more deeply and identify the core elements that create the contrasting feelings.

By enhancing these elements in her choice of material, she creates abstract, handmade sculptures and installations that convey the mixed feeling of comfort and sadness to her audience. For her, material and handwork are essential to her practice. Every material carries its own life and personality, with different qualities and natural shapes that are similar to the unique characters of people. By combining handwork and the characteristics of the material, she believes there is a transformation happening resulting in a new object that is neither hers nor the materials’. This transformation allows the viewer to experience the object and relate to it with their own body and personal memories.

A work about the relationship between the body and facades

Stones are stacked, the façade that comes from it offers safety.

It will bring a border and a opening. Facades are protected and decorated.

The body search for a safe space, gets decorated, but if it can’t find one, it becomes stiff.

Repeating the thing that does feel trustworthy.

It will hold its own, till it can’t anymore. It cracks under the pressure.

Instead of hiding behind a façade it will become one.
